What Is Jamun Jam?

Jamun jam is a sweet and tangy fruit spread made with fresh jamun (black plum), sugar, lemon juice, and a hint of cinnamon. It has a rich flavour and beautiful deep purple colour that pairs wonderfully with bread, pancakes, yogurt, and cakes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh jamun pulp (about 500 g fresh jamun)
  • 1 to 1½ cups sugar (adjust according to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon powder (optional)
  • ½ cup water

How to Make Jamun Jam Recipe

Step 1: Prepare the Jamun Pulp

First, wash the jamuns thoroughly. Next, add them to a saucepan along with ½ cup water. Cook for 5–7 minutes or until the fruit softens.

Allow the jamuns to cool completely. Then, remove the seeds and collect the smooth pulp.

Step 2: Cook the Jam

Transfer the jamun pulp to a heavy-bottomed pan. Add the sugar and mix well. Cook over low to medium heat while stirring occasionally.

Step 3: Thicken the Jam

Continue stirring gently so that the mixture does not stick to the pan. After about 10–15 minutes, the jam will begin to thicken.

At this stage, add the lemon juice. This helps preserve the beautiful colour and slightly improves its keeping quality. If desired, add cinnamon powder for extra flavour.

Step 4: Check the Consistency

Place a small amount of jam on a chilled plate. If it thickens and does not spread quickly, the jam is ready.

Step 5: Cool and Store

Allow the jam to cool completely before transferring it to a sterilised glass jar. Store it in the refrigerator.
