  • Green chilli – 1, or more to taste

How to Make Guava Chutney

Prepare the Guava

First, wash the guava thoroughly and pat it dry.

Next, cut the fruit into small pieces. If the guava has very hard seeds, remove the harder central portion. However, soft seeds can be blended along with the fruit.

Blend the Chutney

To begin, place the chopped guava, coriander, mint, green chilli, and ginger in a blender.

Then, add the roasted cumin powder, chaat masala, and salt. Blend everything until the mixture becomes smooth but still has a little texture.

After that, add the lemon juice and sugar if needed. Blend briefly once again.

Meanwhile, check the consistency. If the chutney is too thick, add water one tablespoon at a time and blend again.

Finally, taste the chutney and adjust the salt, lemon juice, or green chilli according to your preference.

How to Serve Guava Chutney

This fresh guava chutney pairs beautifully with many Indian snacks and meals. For example, you can serve it with:

  • Aloo paratha
  • Methi puri
  • Pakoras
  • Samosas
  • Kachori
  • Dhokla
  • Chaat
  • Sandwiches
  • Rice and dal
  • Roti or paratha

In addition, it makes a delicious spread for an Indian-style sandwich.

Recipe Notes

Choose ripe but firm guava. Very soft guava can make the chutney watery. Therefore, slightly firm ripe fruit works best.

Do not add too much water. Guava already contains moisture, so begin with just 1 tablespoon. Then, add more only when necessary.

Adjust the sweetness. Some guavas are naturally sweet, while others are more tart. For this reason, sugar is completely optional.

Keep the flavour fresh. Fresh lemon juice adds a pleasant brightness. At the same time, it balances the sweetness of the guava.

For a smoother chutney, strain it through a fine sieve after blending if your guava has many hard seeds.

For a thicker chutney, simply use less water while blending. As a result, the finished chutney will have a richer, thicker consistency.

For more heat, add another green chilli according to your taste.

Storage

For the best taste and colour, enjoy this chutney fresh.

However, if you have leftovers, transfer the guava chutney to a clean, airtight glass container. Refrigerate it and use within 2 days.

Since this is a fresh chutney without preservatives, I recommend making a small batch rather than storing it for several days.
