Looking for a delicious twist on the traditional Ukadiche Modak? Try Fried Modak, also known as Taloniche Modak in Marathi. These golden, crispy dumplings are stuffed with a sweet, flavorful filling of coconut, jaggery, and nuts, making them the perfect offering for Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi.
Ingredients for Fried Modak:
- 1 cup maida (refined flour)
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
- 1 cup grated coconut
- ¾ cup jaggery
- ½ teaspoon cardamom powder
- 2 tablespoons chopped nuts (almonds, cashews, or pistachios)
- Oil for frying
Instructions to Make Fried Modak:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup maida with 2 tablespoons ghee.
- Gradually add water and knead the mixture into a soft, smooth dough. Cover and let it rest for 15-20 minutes.
- Make the Sweet Filling:
- Heat a pan on medium heat, add 1 cup grated coconut, and stir in ¾ cup jaggery. Cook until the jaggery melts and blends with the coconut.
- Add ½ teaspoon cardamom powder and 2 tablespoons chopped nuts (almonds, cashews, or pistachios) for extra crunch.
- Let the mixture cool slightly.
- Shape the Modaks:
- Divide the dough into small balls. Roll out each ball into a small circle (about 3-4 inches in diameter).
- Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center of the circle.
- Carefully fold and pinch the edges together to form the modak shape. Ensure they are sealed properly to avoid any leakage while frying.
- Fry the Modaks:
- Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
- Gently slide the modaks into the hot oil and fry them until golden brown and crispy. Remove them with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel.
Serving Suggestion:
Enjoy these crunchy, sweet Fried Modaks warm or at room temperature. They are perfect for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations or as a festive treat anytime!
